Bandwidth Overage Protection
At the rate of $0.50/GB over, the cost fo an unplanned bandwidth overage can be considerable. Whether your server is compromised, leading to an overage outside of your normal server activity or you are the victim of a denial of service (DoS) attack, Solar VPS bandwidth overage protection can eliminate up to 100% of all applicable bandwidth overage fees.
How Bandwidth is Measured
Bandwidth is measured by Solar VPS as the total amount of traffic transferred to and from your server within a specific billing cycle. Each billing cycle is alloted with a specific amount of bandwidth transfer and that amount is inclusive in the cost of the hosting plan. Any additional transfer is charged at the rate of $0.50 per GB over.
Why It's So Important
Running a server that is accesible via internet protocols ( web, ftp, mail ) takes enormous time and responsibility to maintain. Along with the normal responsibilities comes the enormous risks and responsibilities of the security of that server. The internet is a vast network that runs with very few laws and regulations, which makes securing your presence on the internet much more important. Since bandwidth is the transfer of data to and from your server, taking responsibility to protect your bandwidth has become crucial to minimizing unplanned costs. Most of us would not consider living without health insurance or driving a car without car insurance as the costs for an incident beyond our control can be considerable. Bandwidth overage protection is no different. For a small monthly fee, you can ensure that your server is protected from bandwidth overages outside of your control.
What Bandwidth Overage Protection Covers
Bandwidth overage protection exists to provide a certain level of insurance to customers in the event that they receive a bandwidth overage for transfer outside of their control and what Solar VPS would consider to be the responsibility of the customer. This type of activity includes a DoS ( Denial of Service ) attack or transfer of data from files placed on your server by an intruder as a result of a security breach.
Bandwidth Overage Not Covered
General bandwidth usage that is within your server's normal activity such as normal web, ftp and mail transfer ( as those applies to the majority of VPS systems ), are not covered by bandwidth overage protection. As an example, this means that if your run a forums web site and your web site receives an abnormally high number of hits in a given billing cycle and that increased usage leads to a bandwidth overage, the additional $0.50 per GB charge still applies and would not be covered by bandwidth overage protection. Solar VPS feels that customers are responsible for what they do with their servers and normal increased traffic is something within control of each customer. Under general circumstanecs, this type of overage is usually minimal as most servers do not double or triple bandiwidth usage from one billing cycle to another by normal usage.
How a Bandwidth Overage is Handled
In the event you receive a bandwidth overage bill that you believe to be the result of a DoS attack or transfer from files placed on your server by an intruder as a result of a security breach, you would be required to submit an email to the Solar VPS billing department with a request to audit the overage. Bandwidth overages that are covered by Bandwidth Overage Protection must have related support correspondence to document the incident. This would be a support ticket that would cite an attack on your server or the presence of files ( typically video, warez, music or other copyrighted materials ) on your server that you or any other authorized party to your server did not place there. Upon the billing department receiving this request for audit, an investigation would be be conducted as to the presence of required corresponding help desk data. Provided that all applicable data is present, a credit would be issued to your account for the bandwidth overage. If the billing department were to determine that the overage was from normal server usage or that the attack or breah was due to actions taken by you or another authorized person with access to your server, the credit would not be issued and you would be responsible for payment of the overage charge.
