Windows VPS network bandwidth?

Hi All,

Looking into doing some low volume FTP of high definition video from my travels over the last 8 months for family and friends. Have setup my FTP server, but I don't seem to be able to get full speed out of the link. I'm in London at the moment and my VPS is based in the New Jersey datacentre and my download speed seems to be toping out at around 680KBytes/sec, which is around the 5~6Mbit a second mark.

I know it is not the VPS or the FTP server as if I use something like Internet Explorer on the VPS to download a file from the FTP server so it doesn't touch the network it transfers at about 6MByte/sec (48Mbit/sec). Just wondering if it is the link between New Jersey and London that is the bottleneck, or if there is some other reason why I seem to be unable to get close to full speed? I've placed a test file on my FTP server here;

I'd appreciate getting feedback on download speeds other people are getting, especially those in the New Jersey area.

I've been trying to get an idea of what is limiting my transfer speed here, so I tried the test downloads from the Network & Data Center page which only averaged 365kbyte/sec (under 3Mbit) from data center 1 with a bit more respectable 787kbyte/sec (6.2Mbit) from data center 2. I could not test the speeds from the UK data center as I got a 404 error on the test file. This is more or less consistent with what I'm getting from my VPS, which is well short of 100Mbit.

I have a 24Mbit ADSL2+ connection which is able to download at a full 24Mbit/sec from all the decent FTP servers here in Europe, but I'm not sure what backbone my ISP is linking into back to the States so that could also be the bottle neck. That could well be it actually as I tried just about all the North American Ubuntu mirrors and none of them got much above 800kbyte/sec (6.25Mbit). Not that I'm complaining with getting 650kbyte/sec from a VPS mind you, just wondering why it is so far short of the 100Mbit capacity of the server my VPS is hosted on.
