Existing VPS Running Virtuzzo 3
Earthling:
Comparison: Think how long it would take you to run an update on your PC from, say, XP to Vista. Now add to that the responsibility of making this one of those "This cannot go wrong" type of jobs, because your computer is needed by someone else immediately you're done.
Now relate that to what Team Solar would have to contend with: I won't guess how many nodes that Solar have on VZ3, and the number of VPS Admins all wanting to have their VPSs up 24/7 with no downtime. Then there's the number of visitors and emails that might not make it to the hundreds of domains involved while the upgrade is running on each node.
Now I'm not generally a pessimist or party-pooper but I, for one, would rather leave what's working well working well, you know, and let customer upgrades, occasional cancellations, etc., gradually empty out the VZ3 nodes, which can then be upgraded when empty, and when there isn't a bunch of unknowns just waiting to hit the proverbial fan if one of the upgrades doesn't go according to plan.
Unless, of course, Ross now turns around and says that it's way less complicated than that! ;)
Roscoe Pico:
No... that about sums it up :) Of course there is more to it than this but you get the general idea...
Retriever II:
You guys don't like to play with fire? :D
I agree though that if things are running well, which they are, there's not much point in touching existing nodes.
But what motivated the transition from VZ2 to VZ3?
cartwright118:
Ye ok, I understand what you are getting at :o Anyone to go from XP to Vista is mad anyway;) Maybe people would make the same mistake when going from VZ 3 to VZ 4.
I'd also like to know what is so important about going from VZ 3 to VZ 4
Regards CJ
Roscoe Pico:
Nothing that is so noteworthy its worth risking major problems. Also, we didn't upgrade any nodes from VZ2 to VZ3 but rather decommissioned older nodes that were running vz 2.6. We already have 4 new nodes online running vz4 since the beginning of March and over time, we will decommission older vz3 nodes and rebuild and reuse them for some of the new products we will be offering.
