[SOLARGREEN] Let's talk bicycling!
Douglas:
Okay, since we don't have a SolarGreen section yet, I'll start it here...
Any of y'all bicycling affecianados? After a 7 year hiatus from bicycling and watching my weight balloon up to nearly 290 pounds (130.45 kg or 23 stone for you across-the-pond'ers), I decided it was time to get myself back into shape and back to optimal phsical fitness. I bought a cross trainer bike approximately 3 weeks ago. I'm currently doing two days riding, one to two days off type cycle, just so I can get my endurance back up and start shedding pounds.
I used to do 30 - 75 mile (48 - 120km) a day bike rides a 1-2 days a week on my last bicycling craze... and before that (9 years ago), I was doing 30 - 50 miles a day, four to five days a week.
Growing up, you couldn't KEEP me off of a bike... I even had a penchant for "challenging" my regular public transit drivers to a race downtime (15 miles). We would both go the same approximate route, I would hop onto side streets that had fewer stop signs, and I would regularly beat the buses downtown by almost 10 minutes. I was 145 pounds (almost the same height) back then.
I don't want to get down to my high school weight again, mind you, but I'd be happy around 190 - 210 pounds, as long as the body fat wasn't the primary reason why.
Let's not forget how much better for the environment bicycling is. I actually purchased a QUik 'N EZ cart (image below) to help me out on my grocery store runs. By using this combo, I can actually avoid having to call for a taxi or a ride to take me home. I get PLENTY of exercise with that much weight being pulled, as I live in an extremely hilly area. Saves me money ($6 - $10 per trip), saves me time (waiting on a taxi is a 15-20 minute wait, if I bike home, I'm home by that time), and saves on the environment by utilizing alternate transportation methods.
Are there any other bicycling junkies here? :)
(the tote cart I bought, can carry up to 100 pounds)

I think your image is borked :)
Before I moved 3 years ago, I used to bicycle frequently. Not huge distances, but it was convenient for getting around town or between friends' houses. After I moved, I sort of stopped, since it was no longer convenient.
Last spring I finally took the bike out again and gave it a badly-needed tuneup, and also did one for my sister. Got some riding in but not much. Now that nice weather is rolling around again, I hope to do a lot more, including the 4mi trip to work. The exercise would do me a lot of good.

I'm really liking that little truck you attach on the back!
In the summer I like taking my Mountain Bike for a spin around the woods near me. There are two Public National Parks not too far from each other, probably about 30 minutes or so riding a Bike.
So I go from my house, up to the first national park on the road, and once I get onto the trail there are hundreds of different routes I can take, so I go for a little ride around the one park, then go for a ride down through the woods to the other park and finally from there, back home.
It's a really good source of exercise and gets me away from college and work for a while. Me, my iPod and my bike! Ultimately relaxed.
Regards CJ
Retriever II:
So with the nice weather I broke the mountain bike out this afternoon. Now I realize just how out of shape I've gotten -- I was completely exhausted from a short 1 mile trip down the road. :o
Well, that's why I need to do this more often. Also, that's really cool that you've got some nice national parks so close. A lot more interesting than the road.

I used to do a lot of cycling when I was younger, and would love to get back into it. In fact I will when I move home in the next couple of years. Where I'll be moving to is right on the coast, and has a seaside cycleway that stretches 5 or 6 miles. I plan to have a regular pedal along that route, not least because at the far end is a little cabin that sells THE best fish and chips for 100 miles. Yeah, I know, kinda defeats the object, but us old farts have to have SOME motivation, ya know! ;)
