Los Angeles Dynamic Dedicated Server availability announced!

The Solar VPS team is happy to announce that beginning Wednesday, October 21st, we will be able to offer our incredibly popular Dynamic Dedicated Servers (DDS) in Los Angeles. Those of you that are on any of our current DDS or FAME systems know just ho powerful our DDS systems are, and exactly why we call them an Enterprise class VPS.

dotDefender Application Firewall

One of our newest offerings (and one of our favorite ones) is the dotDefender Application Firewall from Applicure. This incredible application virtually renders your VPS unhackable via the most common web based exploits (SQL Injection and Cross Site Scripting (XSS) attacks account for nearly 90% of system compromises).
If you've ever had your website defaced by hackers, you know just how much time and effort goes into restoring your files and your system. In several cases, it takes a complete system reload in order to ensure that the exploit is no longer on your system.
Most causes of these attacks are the result of various scripts not being patched and updated as new exploits are discovered. Unless you're on top of every application update that you use (forums, eCommerce, anything that uses a form input box, etc), you're at risk.
There is no way to guarantee that your system will never be compromised, however, dotDefender does a pretty impressive job of blocking most of these attacks. We even use it on all of our operations systems.

It doesn't actively block them, just reports to you what people have done to try to gain access to your system. Please note that we cannot offer a trial version on unmanaged subscriptions, only the managed ones.
The paid version actively blocks these attacks as well as reports them.

Traffic Control Anti Spam

It's estimated that nearly 80% of all email traffic today is actually unsolicited spam email. How much time are you wasting by sorting through them?
"A random telephone survey of 1,000 adults by the National Technology Readiness Survey produced by Rockbridge Associates Inc. and the University of Maryland's Center for Excellence in Service revealed that 75 percent of Internet users receive spam daily. The average number of spam messages received per day is 18.5 and the average time spent each day deleting them is 2.8 minutes. The study found that the loss in productivity equals $21.6 billion per year based on average U.S. wages."
"A survey commissioned by McAfee states that 49% of Americans spend more than 40 minutes per week deleting spam, with 14% reporting they spend as much as three and a half hours a week -- or 7.5 days per year on this task."

We've now got the Traffic Control Anti Spam Email Firewall available for all Linux based customers (this is not available for Windows based systems at this time, unfortuntely).
Most anti-spam systems block connections from known spam senders. But spam from new or unknown senders still has to be filtered - and filtering eats up your server resources.
Traffic control adds another powerful tool to the anti-spam arsenal: the ability to slow down traffic from suspicious and unknown sources. With their bandwidth reduced, spammers have no choice but to move on to easier targets. The net result is as much as 95% reduction in the number of servers required to process email, and less spam reaching end users.
It integrates and plays very nicely with SpamAssassin (available with cPanel and Plesk based control panels). This combined system can stop up to 95% of incoming spam, and with a false positive ratio of less than 1 in every 100,000 emails, the chance of missing a legitimate email is extremely rare. This system even has the ability of detecting a legitimate email from a mailing list that you want to be on from one that you don't want to be on.

With as dependent as we are on email services, what are you doing to ensure that the emails that you're getting are sync'd up everywhere? When you're travelling (even locally), and you respond to an email via a mobile device, does it get marked as responded/read on your desktop/laptop system, too?
